Understanding the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)
The alternative minimum tax (AMT) is frequently a misunderstood tax that represents opportunities for effective tax planning.
It is estimated by the Congressional Budget Office that the AMT will affect millions of taxpayers in 2010. Given its insidious nature, AMT is frequently mentioned by legislators as a law that should be repealed, but the cost of doing so is projected to be $620 billion over 10 years. This would be difficult to accomplish given our current, uncertain economic environment.
