WTAS Announces Africa Tax Desk

With economies in Africa continuing to grow and produce exciting new investment and business opportunities, there is an increased need for international tax guidance and support related to Africa. WTAS is pleased to announce its new U.S.-based Africa Tax Desk. The Africa Desk will act as a technical resource and liaison for U.S.- and foreign-based businesses and their owners/senior executives which are either doing business in or have an interest in doing business in Western, Central and Eastern African countries.

After joining forces with STC Partners in 2013 through WTAS Global, WTAS has a unique ability to provide its wide range of tax, valuation, financial advisory and related consulting services to individual and corporate clients in both English and French speaking countries. The resulting capabilities and experience set allows us to provide services and guidance for both U.S. and African requirements. The Africa Desk can provide assistance in the following areas:

International Business Tax Assistance

  • Tax assistance related to cross-border operations
  • Tax credits, withholding taxes, application of double tax treaties
  • Tax planning

Indirect Tax Services

  • Assistance on indirect tax issues (VAT and other sales tax) arising either from local operations or from cross-borders investments
  • Compliance with filing and payment requirements

Tax Audits & Litigations

  • Assistance with respect to tax audits and litigation (in non-U.S. countries primarily in Africa and France) in several tax areas: corporate income tax, personal income tax, indirect taxes, transfer pricing, etc.
  • Follow-up and negotiations with tax authorities and assessment as well as advice regarding tax litigation strategy

Transfer Pricing Services

  • Analysis of intra-group flows with the expertise of a multidisciplinary dedicated team
  • Drafting of transfer pricing documentations
  • Assistance in negotiation and conclusion of advance pricing agreements

M&A Tax Services

  • Assistance in M&A transactions in connection with local or international restructurings
  • Buy-side or sell-side tax due diligence
  • Tax structuring of operations in Africa

International Wealth and Tax Planning

  • Cross-border income tax compliance and planning for individual business owners/senior executives
  • Foreign tax credit and treaty planning for individuals
  • Identify estate and gift tax impact and planning opportunities
  • Where applicable, comply with the various complex U.S. informational reporting requirements for activities in African countries (and other countries), such as for foreign partnerships, foreign corporations and foreign bank accounts
  • Understand income tax implications related to structure of investments (in a tax efficient manner) and business activities which may yield U.S. source income

The U.S.-based Africa Tax Desk will be led by Sonny Ankrah who will work in conjunction with Christian Couderc and Laurence Elong-Mbassi of STC Partners, the French member firm of WTAS Global and its African network (C2A). WTAS has four tax desks representing the UK, Argentina, China and now Africa.
