Hogan Quoted in Tax Notes Article Regarding Estate Planning

Andersen Managing Director Jim Hogan was quoted in a recent Tax Notes article written by Jonathan Curry. The article titled, Estate Planners Proceeding with Caution Absent Clawback Guidance, provides insight and opinions from Jim and other tax experts, on the possibility of the doubled estate and gift tax exemption expiring.

In the excerpt, Jim acknowledged that the Treasury will need to come up with a solution on how to treat the transfer of a deceased spouse’s unused exclusion amount if the exemption is lowered. He also suggested that taxpayers may need to try a different approach on their planning, dependent on the Treasury’s solution. Jim also speculated that the Treasury may be creating a simple solution based on the lack of guidance so far.

Jim Hogan, a member of Andersen's US National Tax team, has over 35 years of legal and accounting experience and was most recently a Branch Chief in Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Office of the Chief Counsel. In that role, he had responsibility for all matters relating to estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax issues.
